A COMPARISON OF ORGANIZATION THEORIES.

Abstract

It is the purpose of this paper to suggest a framework that permits a comparison of certain theories of organization that appear in the literature of economics with those in the literature of administration. The relations between the economist's theory of the firm and what is usually called in administrative writings the 'theory of organizational equilibrium' have never been made explicit, and writers in the one field often appear unaware of the possible implications for their work of the investigations that have been arried on in the other. Part I of this paper sets forth verbal descriptions and comparisons of the theories in question. In part II a mathematical framework is proposed capable of encompassing both theories as special cases. (Author)
