THE ROCKET RANGE AT ANDOYA.

Abstract

A rocket range at Andoya in northern Norway is described. Nike Cajun or equivalent rockets can be fired from a zero length launcher. A rather simple doppler method is used to measure the slant range to the vehicle as a function of time during the flight. For rockets like the Nike Cajun such a system is felt satisfactory, although radar tracking is planned for later launchings. In August 1962 the first rocket Ferdinand I was successfully launched, and during December 1962 Ferdinand II and II were also successfuly launched. Some of the most important facilities at the range are described, the operational procedure is outlined, and the experience gained from the first three launchings is discussed. (Author)
