COLUMBIUM ' 'H' ' SECTION PROGRAM, PHASE I. EXTRUSION. PHASE II. DRAWING.

Abstract

Phase I goal is the extrusion of D-43 (Cb-lOWlZr-O.lC) and Cb-752 (Cb-lOW-2.5Zr) H sections, of specified size, with section thicknesses of 0.060 in., and lengths of at least 20 feet. Two 8-in.-diam-ingots were melted of each alloy, converted to billets, and extruded to 3.7 in.diam stock. Nine 3.4-in. diam-billets were extruded to H sections with thicknesses of 0.187 and 0.125 in. (extrusion ratios of 12.4:1 and 18.2:1), from 3400 F. The results are reported and the future program is discussed. Phase II goal is the drawing of extruded H sections of the above alloys to specified size, with section thicknesses of 0.040 in., and lengths of at least 20 feet. Die designs were made and general equipment requirements for drawing the H sections were studied. (Author)
