COMPUTER CALCULATION OF DOSE RATES IN TWO-LEGGED DUCTS USING THE ALBEDO CONCEPT

Abstract

The results of calculations are given of gammaray dose rates in two- legged retangular concrete ducts. The calculations were performed on an IBM 1620. They are based on the differential dose albedo and include multiple scattering effects. The results of the calculations are compared with experimental data for ducts whose widths vary from 11 inches to 6 feet, using Co-60, Cs-137, Au-198, and Na-24 gamma-ray sources. The calculated dose rates agree to within =30 percent for all ducts and all sources, except for small ducts with Cs-137 sources, ducts with very short first legs (L1/W less than or equal to 1.33), and for Au-198 sources.
