DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH FREQUENCY ELECTRON-BEAM PARAMETRIC AMPLIFIER.

Abstract

Efforts were continued on a study of the feasibility of extending the operating frequency of non-degenerate cyclotron wave parametric amplifiers to X-band. To reduce possible effects due to the beam diameter being a large fraction of a cyclotron wavelength, a Pierce gun has been designed to produce an 0.010 in. diameter beam. An experiment which attempted to vary the cathode emission area by applying negative potentials to the Pierce electrode did not give a positive result. Further measurements are reported on the 400 Mc tube (with 1000 Mc cyclotron frequency). The sources of excess noise in this tube are discussed. (Author)
