ELECTRON DENSITY PROFILE IN THE IONOSPHERE D-REGION. CONSTRUCTION OF A MODEL ACCOUNTING FOR CERTAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LARGE, NIGHTTIME, PHASE AND AMPLITUDE FLUCTUATIONS OF VLF SIGNALS IN ARIZONA DURING SUMMER,
Abstract
In an effort to find the cause of the wellknown abnormal nighttime fluctuations in the ionosphere D-region, vlf measurements were made over short paths in the southwestern United States. The data can be explained by postulating a model in which the base of a nighttime E-layer occurs at 100 km, with a ledge of electron density of about 180 electrons/milliliter extending downward to a height of 90-95 km. Horizontally moving perturbations of the boundry layer would then cause large phase and amplitude fluctuations. (Author)
