THE SPIN DENSITY IN COBALT,

Abstract

An alternate interpretation is given to the polarized neutron diffraction data of Menzinger and Paoletti on fcc cobalt. Several objections are given to their interpretation of a large difference in the mean square amplitude of thermal vibration of the spin density compared to the nucleus. The data is alternately interpreted on the basis of a temperature dependence of the radial distrubution of spin density with total radial charge density unchanged. The relative occupations of e sub g and t sub 2g orbitals for fcc cobalt are also derived from the data. (Author)
