THE VARIATION IN THE STRUCTURE OF PREPRECIPITATION ZONES DURING AGING,

Abstract

The descriptions of preprecipitation zone structures in Al-Cu alloys have been rapidly changing since the early 1940's. Refinements in the method of obtaining data and treating such data have been the major reasons for these changes. In the present work, the diffuse X-ray intensity due to the zones in Al-3.85 wt% Cu alloy aged at 130 C was obtained by a counter diffractometer method, and the Fourier transform of the amplitude was taken near the (200) A1 reciprocal lattice point. The observed electron density along with a truncation function expressing the limits of the measurements were used to find the actual electron density by a relaxation method. The numerical analysis in this work was programed for and processed on an IBM 7090 computer. (Author)
