FREE AIR THERMOMETER DEVELOPMENT MODEL 14-201, SERIAL 101.

Abstract

A radiometric thermometer has been designed and fabricated for routine measurement of long path lengths of air from a moving aircraft. It measures the radiation emitted from atmospheric CO2 in a narrow wavelength region centered on the CO2 band at 15 microns, and compares this radiation with the emission from a reference blackbody. Their difference is then related empirically to air temperature. The instrument's operation is unaffected by ambient thermal conditions because of a novel arrangement of thermostated optical components. As a result, absolute measurement of air temperature is made to 0.5C over a target temperature range of -60 C to +30 C. (Author)
