NOTS STANDARD METHODS FOR THE CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF ALPHA NITRONAPHTHALENE.

Abstract

Alpha nitronaphthalene is used in small amounts in certain types of explosives to prevent the formation of cracks during the casting process. Heretofore specifications for this additive have included only a minimum melting point, a specific gravity range, and a compatibility test based on a vacuum stability test. It is recommended that suitable limitations be added to the specifications for moisture content, assay value, amount of hydrochloric acid-soluble iron, amount of material insoluble in chloroform, and a typical infrared spectrum--all determined by the procedures described herein.
