PRECISION FORGING PROGRAM FOR TURBINE WHEELS AND GEARS.

Abstract

The radial extrusion forming process was developed to produce high speed gears and turbine wheels with integral blades. Process variables were established and applied to full scale forging. Evaluation of the secondary closure mechanism demonstrated the feasibility of applying a secondary hydraulic pressure to forging tooling while the main ram of the mechanical press supplies the energy required for forging. Actual forging tests were conducted with the components developed. (Author)
