SOLVENT EFFECTS ON THE ELECTRONIC SPECTRUM OF 4-METHYL-4-METHOXY-2-PENTANONE,

Abstract

The ultraviolet absorption spectrum of 4-methyl4-methoxy-2-pentanone was studied in the 1850 to 3500 angstrom region. In the pure state, a weak band was observed at 2870 Angstrom and a strong doublet at 1903 and 1944 angstrom. The long wavelength band was characterized as the n to pi transition by a blue shift of the lambda (max) in going from nonpolar to polar solvents. The doublet was similarly identified as the n to sigma transition. The shift of the n to pi band was compared to that of acetone for the same nonpolar, polar, or hydroxylic solvent. (Author)
