INVESTIGATION OF PHASE CHANGES IN ICE SOLUTIONS BY ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY MEASUREMENTS,

Abstract

Electrical resistivity measurements were employed to study the phase changes in ice solutions from O C to -196 C. Conductivity curves as a function of temperature are presented for various concentrations of salts in ice over the temperature range. The transition from the hexagonal structure to the cubic structure is dramatized in these curves. This transition was found to be affected by the concentration of salt in the solution and by the rate of colling the frozen solutions. X-ray diffraction patterns of the ice soltuions were taken and are presented and are correlated with the conductivity data. (Author)
