STUDY OF SPECIAL BEAMSHAPING ANTENNAS.

Abstract

Presented are the theoretical and experimental investigations conducted during the first three months of a program to investigate the applicability of end-fire, dielectric radiating elents in primary feeds for lenses and reflectors. While the original program was intended to investigate dielectric tube antennas, the theoretical work being conducted on the program has indicated that a second radiating element - the foamrod antenna - shows excellent promise for the present applications. Two theoretical techniques for the prediction of radiation characteristics have been studied to date, they are: (1) End-Fire Array Theory and (2) Optical (Ray Tracing) Theory. End-Fire Array Theory has been used in the past with such elements and relatively poor agreement between theory and experiment was obtained. It is shown in this report that this poor agreement is the result of the use of wave velocities that apply to infinitely long dielectric waveguides and it is further shown that wave velocity on finite length elements is a rather sensitive function of element length and/or exciter characteristics.
