LONG-DISTANCE VHF COMMUNICATIONS GROUND ANTENNA ARRAY.

Abstract

The antenna described is for use in the troposcatter mode, vhf communication at distances up to 600-naut mi for air-traffic control. It is a ground situated array of fixed azimuthal position and is capable of reception as well as transmission. The array is composed of eight vertical 60 degree corner reflectors, each containing 16 half-wavelength vertical dipoles. One corner section is used for transmitting and all eight for receiving. A system of preamplifiers and phasing networks is used to provide the required multiple receiving beams. Results of antenna pattern measurements made at the Barnstable site are included, together with the final test procedures for proper antenna operation and power handling capability. (Author)
