ASDE BRIGHT-DISPLAY STUDY.

Abstract

The results are presented of a study of brightdisplay techniques for the Airport Surface Detection Equipment Radar (SDE). The object of this study has been to determine the optimum display technique to permit the high-resolution radar information to be viewed in the daytime environment of airport tower cabs. The results indicate that television scan-conversion techniques and direct-view storage tubes are applicable to the design of a bright ASDE display. It is concluded that, with the existing state of the art, a scan-conversion system is most promising for the requirement. The recommended configuration for such a system would use the existing ASDE-2 display consoles, modified to accommodate a high-resolution television camera for direct pick-up of the PPI presentation on a 5-inch flat-face CRT. Displays in the tower cab would be bright television monitors, using the FAA 945-line TV standard. With this system, the objective for 20-ft, effective system range resolution can be achieved for airport coverage up to 9000 X 12,000 ft. (Author)
