SUPPORTING RESEARCH DIRECTED TOWARD AN INVESTIGATION OF BACKGROUND DISCRIMINATION TECHNIQUES FOR AIR-TO-SURFACE MISSILES.

Abstract

A study is presented of environmental backgrounds to develop an optimum family of reconnaissance sensors for detecting and identifying high priority tactical targets. The ultimate goal of this study is to provide guidelines for selection of sensors for target acquisition and guidance in future air-to-surface missile (ASM) systems. Work completed in the first quarter led to the identification of the reconnaissance sensor selection problem. As the program progresses, this problem will be defined and solutions sought. To achieve these goals, a broad framework of methodology for sensor systems analysis has been generated. Certain required study areas are identified including remote reconnaissance sensor selection, designation of target signatures, and definition of world environment. Techniques are described for analysing complex associations between targets, sensors and environments. Another accomplishment was the development of unique procedures for predicting returns at three radar frequencies for existing world soil and vegetation combinations. These procedures are documented.
