ORGANOSULPHUR CHEMISTRY.

Abstract

4-T-Butylthiacyclohexane and 4-methylthiacyclohexane were prepared. Each of these sulphides on oxidation with a peroxyacid gives a (1:1) mixture of isomeric sulphoxides. A technique was developed to separate the individual isomers from the mixture by treatment with HgCl2. The sulphoxides have been regenerated from these HgCl2 complexes without affecting the sulphuroxygen bond. Each sulphoxide, on further oxidation, gives the same dioxide as obtained from the oxidation of the corresponding sulphide with an excess of the oxidant. A method for the equilibration of isomeric sulphoxides was devised. Reactions of triphenylmethyl isothiocyanate were investigated and compared with those of other triphenylmethly derivatives. Some of the reactions studied are reversible. (Author)
