DEVELOPMENT OF CHEMICAL MILLED WAFFLE GRID BERYLLIUM STRUCTURAL PANEL,

Abstract

This report concerns the research and development of an aerospace structural panel made from QMV beryllium hot-rolled plate. The program was a joint effort of three companies. The Brush Beryllium Company manufactured the beryllium plate. The United States Chemical Milling Corporation milled the integrally stiffened structural panel to the design specification established by the General Dynamics Corporation/ Fort Worth. General Dynamics Corporation/Fort Worth conducted the final structural tests on the finished panel. Results of this program confirm the ability of todays technology to produce a satisfactory structural panel made from beryllium. The most critical problem encountered was the variation of apparent modulus of elasticity. Static strength was found to vary excessively with surface finish. (Author)
