SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF THE CRYSTAL FIELD OF CAF2.

Abstract

Studies of the crystal field of the hexahedral coordination found in calcium fluoride 2 and cadmium fluoride 2 are reported. Absorption spectra are described for several different transition ions in calcium fluoride 2 and cadmium fluoride 2. Crystal growth of cadmium fluoride 2 is discussed and the progress made in introducing both transition ion and rare-earth ion impurtities is described. Preliminary studies of the line width of fluorescence lines in calcium fluoride 2: thulium (2+) and calcium fluoride: Dysprosium (2+) by conventional spectroscopic studies and interferometer techniques are discussed.
