PREPARATION AND EVALUATION OF HIGH PURITY BERYLLIUM.

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to produce high purity beryllium and to study its deformation and fracture characteristics. The major effort of this work has been devoted recently to the hot swaging of zone refined beryllium. Considerable progress has been made toward the development of hot swaging schedules capable of producing sound, fine-grained structures in this high pruity laterial. The recovery, recrystallization and grain growth characteristics of the hot swaged, zone refined beryllium as well as those of hot swaged SR grade Pechiney and commercial grade Berylco beryllium have been studied. Simple bend tests of heat treated zone refined, hot swaged wire exhibited considerable ductility at grain sizes of 60 to 80 microns. (Author)
