PRODUCTION ENGINEERING MEASURE, QUARTZ CRYSTAL UNITS CR-(XM-40)/U (2.5 MC HIGH PRECISION).

Abstract

Presented is semi-annual progress on CR-(XM-40), 2.5 megacycle crystal units. Sample units were fabricated, a manual listing the proposed test equipment and procedures was prepared and the sample units were tested. Ten sample units, seven made from natural quartz and three made from cultured quartz, were tested. All of the units met the =5 parts in 10 to the 10th power per day aging requirement, all of the natural quartz units also met all other requirements, and the cultured quartz units met all other requirements except the resistance requirement, where they exceeded the maximum permitted value. Investigation showed that it is not practical to meet the CR-(XM-40)/U resistance requirement with any currently available cultured quartz material. Because of the lower activity of the cultured quartz, it was recommended that all CR-(XM-40)/U be produced from natural quartz. If this condition is accepted, then the preproduction phase of the project has been successfully completed and the project is ready to enter the pilot run production phase. (Author)
