PEDESTAL DYNAMICS OF A TWO-AXIS PEDESTAL,

Abstract

A two-axis pedestal has certain tracking limitations which become exaggerated when tracking in the vicinity of the tracking station. The limitations of the pedestal described quantitatively in this report involve angular velocity, angular acceleration, and reacquisition capability. Tracking data are presented in the form of contours of constant angular rates (both velocity and acceleration) which are discussed in some detail. Equations are stated which describe the pedestal motion and are interpreted in terms of typical tracking stations. The general tracking equations are developed in Appendix A using the methods of tensor analysis. A discussion of tensor analysis in general is included. (Author)
