INVESTIGATION OF ELECTRO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF LIQUID AND FROZEN ELECTROLYTES AT LOW TEMPERATURES,

Abstract

An investigation has been conducted to study the electro-chemical properties of various electrolytes as their temperatures are lowered to -196 C. Equipment designed for this study and described herein includes a controlled rate cooling rig, a high electrical resistance measuring assembly (for measurements up to 10 to the 16th power ohm-centimeters), and low temperature X-ray diffraction apparatus. Electrical resistivities of electrolytes have been measured as a function of temperature from 25 to -196 C. The effects on these resistivities of varying the composition of the solvent, the composition of the solute, the concentration of the solute, and the rate of cooling the solution are presented. Structural studies of the frozen electrolytes by X-ray diffraction are included and the results therefrom are correlated with the electro-chemical behavior. (Author)
