AUTOMATIC STRATIFICATION OF DESCRIPTORS,

Abstract

A system is suggested that would make use of a digital computer in order to constantly revise the classification of the descriptors in terms of their actual usage within the document descriptions themselves. A two stage process is intended to produce a two level tree or reference catalog which in the first level presents aggregates of highly associated descriptors, while the second level presents respective aggreates of completely dissociated descriptors. The former is called an inclusive partitioning and the latter, an exclusive partitioning. The paper is principally concerned with the exclusive partitioning, but the last chapter is devoted to a discussion of the complete two stage process where a small selection of descriptors taken from the file of the Armed Services Technical Information Agency (ASTIA) is used to illustrate the construction of a sample index of Thesaurus.
