THE EFFECT OF ANCILLARY PERSONNEL ON THE TREATMENT CAPABILITY OF A USAF DENTAL OFFICER,

Abstract

Restorative dentists treat only 33% of the total carious lesions among Air Force personnel. In other words, two-thirds of all lesions remain untreated. To maintain a military force capable of sustained service, not hindered or incapacitated by dental therapy requirements, the treatment capability of the restorative dentist must be improved. This is phase 1 of several studies to increase treatment efficiency. The help of a dental assistant increased the efficiency of treatments 68%. The results were obtained by use of standard operating procedures, equipment, treatment, and instruments. The operatory was according to a recent definitive design of the Department of Defense for an Air Force restorative dentistry operatory. (Author)
