OSCILLATIONS IN AN ARGON DISCHARGE,

Abstract

Various oscillatory phenomena are presented that were observed in a low-pressure glow discharge in argon. For certain conditions, photographs of the discharge are correlated with oscillograms and the static characteristic. A nearly linear variation of oscillation frequency with tube current is shown over several orders of magnitude. Under certain conditions, small-amplitude prebreakdown oscillations are observed, their number varing over a very small range of tube current. Conditions for a stable discharge are outlined. When the tube stability conditions are taken into account, it is shown that V-I curves can be obtained that include reliable data in the negative slope region. (Author)
