MECHANICAL SCALE REMOVAL FROM TITANIUM ALLOY SHEET.
Abstract
Two Department of Defense sheet alloys of titanium, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V, were investigated in developing a mechanical means of removing the scale and oxygen-rich layer formed on sheets during processing at elevated temperature. The recommended process involves descaling with Scotch-brite; coarse grinding to remove the oxygen-rich layer; fine grind for removal of the deeper notches; and polishing with Scotch-brite to condition grind lines. Production size sheet processed through this sequence met specifications for bend ductility. Preliminary investigations were made of three processes for mechanically removing the scale and oxygenrich layers: grit or shot blasting, wide-belt grinding, and wire brushing. Wire brushing was selected and the most promising area for further test work. Additional process investigation of wire brushing and further refinement of wide belt grinding techniques resulted in the selection of a three-step process for accomplishing the objectives: (1) Descale sheet with wire brush and slurry process. (2) Grind to remove oxygenrich layer. (3) Polish with sisal and cloth wheel to condition grind lines. (Author)
