EFFECT OF COLD FORMING ON CHARPY V-NOTCH IMPACT PROPERTIES OF HY-80 STEEL PLATES.

Abstract

Cold forming during fabrication of nuclearpowered, deep-diving submarines can have a significant effect on the mechanical properties of HY-80 steel plates. Therefore, the Applied Research Laboratory initiated a study to deter mine the effect and significance of cold deformation on the mechanical properties of 2-1/2-in. thick plates of HY-80 steel, cold-formed to small radii and consequently to large surface strains. As part of that program, the present report describes the effects of cold deformation and subsequent stress relieving or aging on the Charpy V-notch impact properties of HY-80 steel plates. (Author)
