EVALUATION OF A VARACTOR DIODE PARAMETRIC AMPLIFIER FOR RAWIN SET AN/GMD-2,

Abstract

Results of a test to evaluate a varactor diode parametric amplifier for use with the meteorological Rawin Set AN/GMD-2 are discussed. The exceptionally low noise characteristics of this amplifier are related to the benefits derived by the Rawin Set for increased tracking range and signal-to-noise improvement. It makes possible the use of a lower-power transmitter in the radiosonde and will decrease the volume, weight, and power consumption of the airborne equipment. In three months of operation the parametric amplifier has maintained a 2-db noise figure, with less than 0.5 db shift in gain. It is still in the process of further improvement. (Author)
