STUDY OF A THERMOPHOTOVOLTAIC CONVERTER.

Abstract

Theoretical and experimental studies were made to determine and improve the performance of potential components of a portable thermophotovoltaic converter for terrestrial applications, using conventional fuels. Germanium photovoltaic cells were fabricated and tested for open-circuit voltage and power density at high illumination levels. Silicon cells were tested under high illumination levels to determine output power density; also, the effect of gridding on opencircuit voltage was studied experimentally. Both silicon and germanium cells were operated from hydrocarbon-powered heat sources and tested within inches of the 1400 C surface. (Author)
