FULL-SCALE DEMONSTRATION OF VERTICAL FLOAT SEA-STABILIZATION CONCEPT. PHASE I. REPORT

Abstract

The results are presented of open ocean testing of two PBM-5 seaplanes - one equipped with the vertical float installation and the other with a standard hullborne configuration. Both seaplanes were towed to open sea locations for comparison of pitch, roll and heave in Sea States I and II. Both seaplanes were instrumented and manned by volunteer Navy crews to record crew reactions to extended exposure to wave induced motions. Comparative plots are presented of pitch, roll and heave for the two configurations.
