ICRPG WORKING GROUP ON ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY ROUND ROBIN NO. 22 -- EUDIOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF POWDERED ALUMINUM,
Abstract
Powdered aluminum to be used in solid propellants must be free of oxides. The specification tests, and the test in the JANAF Panel Handbook of Analytical Methods for Solid Propellants, are based on the measurement of the volume of hydrogen evolved when the aluminum is reacted with alkali. Some difficulties have been encountered with the method, however, and the ICRPG Working Group on Analytical Chemistry voted to conduct a round robin to estimate the interlaboratory reproducibility. The round robin was designed to facilitate statistical analysis of the data. Three samples representing different purity levels as well as different manufacturing processes were distributed to determine whether the interlaboratory results were influenced by these factors. The eudiometric assay was simplified by eliminating corrections for impurities which would not affect the interlaboratory comparisons. Conclusions: (1) The eudiometric assay for aluminum used in this round robin is unsatisfactory for interlaboratory use. (2) The results of particle diameter measurements are inconclusive. (Author)
