SPECTROSCOPIC STUDIES: PART 1, THE INFRA-RED SPECTRUM AND STRUCTURE OF SODIUM NITROMETHANE,

Abstract

The Infra-red spectra of sodium nitromethane and nitromethane have been studied between 5000 and 250 cm to the -1 power. Two possible models for the structure of the methanenitronate anion are considered and it is shown that the frequency assignment favours the structure in which an atomic dipole is associated with the carbon atom.
