THE COMPOSITION OF MITOCHROME AND CYTOCHROME OXIDASE FROM RAT LIVER MITOCHONDRIA,

Abstract

Purified preparations of mithchrome and cytochrome oxidase from rat liver mitochondria were subjected to chemical analysis to determine whether these two proteins are similar. The large differences in their amino acid composition as well as the absence of copper in mitochrome and its presence in cytochrome oxidase and the presence of ethanolamine in mitochrome and its absence in cytochrome oxidase allow only one conclusion: mitochrome and cytochrome oxidase are different proteins and it is highly unlikely that mitochrome is derived from aged preparations of cytochrome oxidase.
