BORON HALIDES AND DERIVED COMPOUNDS.

Abstract

During the year compounds of general formulae B2X4 (especially with X = F) and some cyclic molecules were investigated as follows: B2F4 was prepared in good yield from B2Cl4. A detailed study of the IR spectrum of B2F4 was made; the IR spectra of several cyclic molecules were measured and a linear correlation between frequencies tentatively assigned to B-O(sym.) and B-O(asym.) found. The kinetics of liquid-phase pyrolysis of 2-chloro-1,3,2-dioxaborolan were investigated at different temperatures by following the rate of (1) disappearance of easily-hydrolysable chloride and by (2) the appearance of IR absorption bands ascribed to the formation of the postulated pyrolysis product (C1CH2CH20B0)3. Exploratory attempts to synthesize dioxa-compounds containing a B-B bond were made. (Author)
