RESEARCH INVESTIGATION DIRECTED TOWARD EXTENDING THE USEFUL RANGE OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM.
Abstract
Precise measurements have made of the zero-field hyperfine intervals in 14y Cd113m. A precise redetermination has been made of the lifetime of the 3p1 state of Zn. Apparatus is being constructed for the direct observation of the twophoton decay of the metastable (2-2S1/2 state) of the helium ion. A double-resonance study of the hfs of two excited states of the chromium atom is in progress, which should help in the interpretation and understanding of the hyperfine interactions of the transition elements. Theoretical values have been obtained for the cross sections for laser quenching of metastable hydrogenic atoms. The ENDOR spectrum of the VK center in LiF has been observed. The hfs interactions from the first and second lithium nearest neighbors and the first fluorine neighbors have been fully resolved. The theory of photon echoes has been further developed, and it is shown that the radiation damping of the induced electric dipole moment is small enough to permit the observation of echoes. High-pressure microwave absorption measurements have been made on mixtures of CO2 and N2. (Author)
