EVALUATION OF GLASS FIBERS PRODUCED BY BUNDLE DRAWING OPERATIONS,

Abstract

Two samples of glass fibers produced by bundle drawing operations were evaluated and found to have fracture strength in the range 0.07 to 0.20 X to the 6th power psi corresponding to fibers in the size range 1.5 - 4 microns. The relatively low strength of bundle drawn glass fibers, 0.07 to 0.20 X 10 to the 6th power psi as compared to commercially available glass fibers having strengths approaching 0.50 X 10 to the 6th power psi, is probably due to the presence of small transverse cracks or surface imperfections introduced either during processing or during handling.
