STUDIES OF THE PROBLEMS OF CELLULAR CONVECTION IN THE ATMOSPHERE.
Abstract
The classical theory of convection cells in a layer of viscous fluid can be extended so as to make it more relevant to the atmosphere. When we replace the molecular viscosity and conductivity by eddy transfer coefficients we find that, using the classical procedure for computing the critical Rayleigh number for the inset of convection, we determine the product Knu instead. Assuming certain forms of spatial variation of the eddy tranfer coefficients the method of Palm can be used to study their effect on Knu and on cell shape. It is not necessary that the transfer mechanisms should be by eddies. K-theory can be used to represent any transfer mechanism, and the effect of having highly non-isotropic transfer mechanisms is of special interest when clouds are present. (Author)
