THE ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT OF NO2
Abstract
The basic chemical reactions of NO2 which are active during emission and absorption experiments are given. In the thermal decomposition, the transient species NO3 is involved which can obscure the optical measurements of NO2 for wavelengths > 5,500 angstrom units. The present knowledge of the energy levels of NO2 is described and used as the basis for a theoretical prediction of the absorption coefficient at high temperatures. The different descriptions of the absorption used in the literature are reduced to an absorption coefficient (cm2/g). The available experimental data of are listed in a table and presented visually in a figure. By means of a graphical extrapolation, the ranges of wavelengths between 2,500-8,000 angstrom units and of temperatures from between 300-3,000 K are covered.
