MALFUNCTION INVESTIGATION OF CARTRIDGE, 105MM. HE COMPOSITION B, M1 WITH FUZE, PD: M51A5,

Abstract

An investigation was conducted to detemine the cause of an in-bore premature of Cartridge, 105 mm: HE, Composition B, M1, with Fuze, PD: M51A5; how to preclude similar malfunctions; and how to dispose of defective materiel. A premature injuring six persons, occurred at the U.S. Marine Corps base, Camp Pendleton, California, 7 April 1962. Malfunction investigation files show only one such premature in firings of 2,000,000 rounds. Examination and testing of 300 rounds from the malfunction lot disclosed no cause for the premature. It was concluded that subject malfunction was an isolated case and revision of drawings or specifications is not required. It was recommended that the involved cartridge and fuze lots be released without restriction. (Author)
