JOINING OF REFRACTORY METAL FOILS.

Abstract

Standard methods of welding and brazing refractory metal foils (D36, B66, and TZM) are presented. Electron beam, tungsten inert gas, resistance, and ultrasonic welding techniques are evaluated. Nine selected candidate brazing alloys for these materials were screened by means of T-joint brazements, room temperature, high temperature mechanical property tests, and metallographic structure examination. The most promising joining methods for these materials were extended to the fabrication of small honeycomb panels (0.002-inch core, 0.010-inch face sheets) which were block-shear tested at temperatures between 2000 and 2800 F.
