DIFFERENCE SETS IN ELEMENTARY ABELIAN GROUPS,

Abstract

Difference sets are considered in elementary Abelian groups of order p to the mth power, m>1. For odd values of p the quadratic residues of G.F. (p to the n power) form a difference set if and only if p to the n power is identical to 3 (4). A new necessary condition for the existence of difference sets in elementary p groups is derived. An enumeration of all parameter combinations with v=p to the m power, less that or equal to 2500,m>1 leaves only nine cases undecided. (Author)
