QUARTZ CRYSTAL AGING EFFECTS.

Abstract

Forty-five 16 Mc AT-cut quartz resonators were completed and stored in 85 C ovens for frequency measurement prior to anticipated exposure to pulsed gamma radiation. Seventeen 16 Mc AT-cut resonators, fabricated during the previous contract, of the various types of quartz (natural, natural swept, cultured, and cultured swept) were exposed to gamma radiation from a Cs-137 source at an intensity of 1.4 x 10 to the 6th power Rad/Hr for periods ranging from 30 seconds to 87.5 hours. The X-ray Diffraction Source Image Distortion (SID) technique was applied to the examination of 16 Mc resonators mounted in glass containers, and correlation of the patterns with the previous aging histories of the units was obtained.
