DETERMINATION OF THE HALF-LIVES OF PM143 AND PM144,

Abstract

The half-life of Pm-143 was determined as 267 + 15 d and of Pm-144 as 349 + 16 d. Promethium-143 was produced by an (alpha,2n) reaction on Pr-141, and Pm-144 was produced by a (p,n) reaction on enriched Nd-144 (95.7 %). Irradiation conditions were selected that would minimize the formation of other promethium isotopes. The decay of Pm-143 was followed on gamma-ray counters and that of Pm-144 on gamma-ray and beta-ray counters. The energies of the gamma-rays emitted during the decay of these isotopes were determined from gamma-ray pulse-height distribution curves and were in agreement with the published data. (Author)
