PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES OF THE CEREBRAL CORTEX IN RELATION TO CONSCIOUS SENSORY PRECEPTION IN MAN.
Abstract
An analysis was made of the nature of the stimulus requirements for consistently eliciting just threshold conscious sensations by direct stimulation of the somatosensory cortex in waking human subjects. This was based upon a total of 54 successfully run experimental study periods in separate subjects who were undergoing surgical operations for dyskinesias (mainly parkinsonism). This work has laid part of the ground-work for further investigation into the physiological processes of the cortex connected with conscious responses. Some beginnings were made with the problem of the mechanisms of attention in the eliciting of conscious sensation, and with the study of the relationship of evoked potentials in the cortex to the production of threshold conscious sensation.
