MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF TWISTED YARNS. 2. GEOMETRIC STRUCTURE AND FORM OF YARNS

Abstract

In the two previous annual reports, studies on the untwisting of color-coated yarns and their crosssections were presented. Larger model yarn structures were developed to obtain a clear picture of the mechanism of twisting. Atheoretical development on the mechanism of twisting based on the ribbon form was made. The agreement between the theroretical and experimental results was found to be very poor and was due to neglect of various forces acting on the yarn elements. A further development on the theory has been made since and has been included in this report. The improved theory is found to agree very well with the experimental results. To understand the mechanism of ribbon form of twisting in actual yarns, ribbon of rubber filaments were twisted on model twisters and their cross-sections examined.
