STUDY OF COMPREHENSIVE FAILURE THEORY.
Abstract
Research concerns a program to identify, for a given part, all mechanisms which contribute to its ultimate failure for any set of stress conditions to which the part may be exposed. It is required that the essential characteristics of a part be related to the physical mechanisms which give rise to their value. These in turn must be related to stress, time and to each other. In total, the relationships encompass analytic expressions, as well as empirically derived data and graphical solutions. The failure mechanisms, which have been identified as significant for a particular part, are to be developed into a mathematical model suitable for computer programming. It must then be possible to obtain from the computations, for example, the probable first cause of failure, its probable time of occurrence, and the distribution of times to failure, for any specified set of stress conditions encompassed by the model. Study of metal resistors continued, in order to determine the operative physical mechanisms causing resistance to change with time and temperature. (Author)
