RAMJET TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM. VOLUME II. RAMJET STRUCTURAL COMPONENT INVESTIGATIONS.

Abstract

Application evaluation was made of ramjet structural elements utilizing advanced material systems. The materials developed were used as supersonic leading edge components and as combustion chambers and nozzles for rockets and ramjet engines. A comprehensive evaluation was made of the materials physical and mechanical properties, along with an evaluation of their behavior in typical structural components. Reliable, high temperature oxidation resistant coatings of silicon carbide (SiC) have been successfully applied to graphite, tungsten, and molybdenum. Freestanding shapes of SiC have also been produced by the vapor deposition method, but physical behavior characteristics have not been adequately determined for this material. A test method and the necessary equipment for compression testing thin wall tubes and solid specimens at temperatures up to 2460 R was developed. (Author)
