WIDE-BAND BEAM-TYPE PARAMETRIC AMPLIFIER.

Abstract

An X-band, beam-type parametric amplifier capable of operating in a 20-% instantaneous band of frequency is under development. The device is a degenerate type with the pump frequency fixed at 21 gc. The amplifier is to have an RF gain of 25 db and a double-channel noise figure of 2 db. The genreal problems and approaches to the solutions of the problems are discussed. The coupler to be used is a modified bifilar helix and the pump is a resonant quadrupole type. Specific areas of discussion include the choices of beam and circuit parameters in connection with mode separation and selective excitation. The methods of generating a uniform magnetic field and a smooth electron beam are also discussed. Initial calculations and factual data are presented for the coupler, the coupler excitation circuit, the pump characteristics, and the RF matching problems. (Author)
